Lions Trounced In Season Opener

Thursday, September 3, 2009

This was not the season opener McKinney High was hoping for. With an extra week of practice, the Lions - who did not play a zero week game - should have been clicking on all cylinders Thursday night when they hosted Class 5A Sachse. Unfortunately, the Mustangs had other plans and with a dominant ground game led by David Wesley, Sachse cruised to a 56-26 win at Ron Poe Stadium.

After the Mustangs took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, the game was postponed due to lightning. When action resumed, things turned from bad to worse for the Lions as they turned the ball over on their first play and trailed 42-7 at halftime.

MHS quarterback Zach Lee passed for 219 yards and three touchdowns but the LSU-commit also threw three costly interceptions that all resulted in points for the Mustangs. On the ground, senior Damian Willis made the most of his 24 carries as he rushed for 247 yards and a touchdown.

The Mustangs had several stars on the field Thursday night but none shined brighter than running back David Wesley, who finished the game with 396 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns.

McKinney High hosts Denton Ryan (1-0) next Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Ron Poe Stadium.

Willis was better than expected, the offense was not. McKinney's defense still can't stop anybody.
