McKinney Boyd Beats Mesquite Poteet, Dallas Jefferson
The Boyd Broncos won 56-51 in come from behind fashion Friday afternoon against Mesquite Poteet, then blitzed Dallas Jefferson 68-30 later that night in their first two games of the Collin County Roundball Classic.
McKinney Boyd will play at noon Saturday vs. Denton Ryan in a semifinal contest to be held at McKinney North.
The Broncos, now 6-0 overall, fell behind early 8-0 in the afternoon game against Poteet before finally putting 5 points on the board. The first quarter ended with the Broncos trailing 17-13. In the second quarter, the Broncos struggled from the field and only scored 8 points. The halftime score was 32-21.
The Broncos came out strong in the third quarter behind of the play of Dwayne Brooks, Jeff Blackman, and Zach Parr. The Broncos outscored the Pirates 17-6. The score at the end of the quarter was 38-38.
The Broncos continued their strong play in the fourth quarter, making 12 free throws to put the game away.
Leading scorers for the game were Jeff Blackman with 20 points; Dwayne Brooks with 14, Zach Parr with 12, and Alex Coffin with 7.
Against Dallas Jefferson on Friday night, the Broncos jumped to a 16-2 lead after one quarter and a 31-6 advantage at halftime.
Leading scorers for the Broncos were Robert Scott and Jon'Tray Lynch with 14 points, Joe Mansour with 13, Marlo Major with 8, and Kenbea Walker with 7.
In subvarsity action, the Boyd JV team beat John Paul II in second round tournament action by the score of 54-43. Their next game is Saturday at 9 a.m.
Both Boyd freshman teams lost Friday night against Dallas Jesuit. The A-team lost 61-37 and the B-team lost 44-38. "Both teams played tough and battled very hard," Boyd coach Keith Smith said. Both teams return too the hardwood next Tuesday night when the Broncos' freshmen host Plano Vines.
McKinney North Splits Two In Classic
McKinney North lost a heartbreaker, 54-50, to Denton Ryan on Friday in the Collin County Roundball Classic before ending the night with a convincing 71-56 victory over New Boston.
The Bulldogs are now 3-4 going into Saturday's final day of Classic competition.
In the Denton Ryan game, the Bulldogs were tied 21-21 at halftime and trailed only 38-36 going into the fourth quarter before falling.
Antonio Arnold led North with 18 points. Alexander Ridley scored 11, Mason Grimes 11, Robert Potts 5, and Ryan Creel 5.
In the New Boston game, the Bulldogs pulled away early with a fast-paced, 24-14 first quarter lead and 42-23 halftime advantage.
Antonio Arnold scored 17, Mason Grimes 14, Alexander Ridley 12, Robert Potts 12, Ryan Creel 6, Kyle Miller 5, and Todd McGowen 5.
MHS Enjoys Blowout Win, Suffers Blowout Loss
McKinney High blasted Lake Dallas 69-50 before losing to Melissa 68-44 Friday at the Collin County Roundball Classic.
The Lions take a 2-4 record into the final day of the Classic.
Against Lake Dallas, MHS led 17-11 after the first quarter and 36-22 at halftime in a game that never got close.
Balanced scoring saw 10 players score: Ryan Knox and Kale Kite led with 12 each, Jonathan Shannon added 11, Chuck Simmons 7, A.J. Moutry 7, Ronald Rocquemore 6, Hunter Edwards 5, Harry Edohoukwa 5, Kendall Washington 2, and Chris Quincy 2.
Against Melissa, the Lions fell behind 25-7 after one quarter and 47-17 at halftime.
Zach Helmberger of Melissa led all scorers with 21 points and proved difficult to stop.
MHS scorers included A.J. Moutry with 11, Ronald Rocquemore 8, Chuck Simmons 6, Jonathan Shannon 5, Nick Lowe 5, Ryan Knox 5, and Hunter Edwards 4.
