ALLEN – McKinney North won one and tied one in the first day of the Allen Varsity Softball Tournament on Thursday.
The Lady Bulldogs finished in a 1-1 tie with Paris in the first game and bombed away in their second game, smashing two home runs en route to a 5-0 victory over Rowlett.
North pitcher Kristen Adkins started the day strong, striking out seven and allowing just one hit and one walk. For Paris, the walk and subsequent hit were timely as it used the combination to drive in its only run.
The Lady Bulldogs got even late, starting with a double to left by Adkins. Elizabeth Dankers, running for Adkins, scored on a Kelsey Schendt single up the middle. The Lady Bulldogs had just three hits.
North (5-2-1) came alive in the second game against Rowlett.
Kathy Shelton led off with a single to right, and two batters later Adkins crushed her first home run of the season. Adkins’ blast to left center gave the Lady Bulldogs an early 2-0 lead.
In the top of the third inning, Lindsey Post walked and Schendt moved her over with a bunt. Meghan Knowles tallied her second hit of the game to bring Schendt home. Amy Kilpatrick followed with her first high school home run, a two-run bomb that rattled off of the score board in left field and gave the Lady Bulldogs the five-run advantage.
Adkins controlled the Rowlett bats, scattering three hits, striking out eight and walking two.
The Lady Bulldogs take on Waco Midway and Amarillo Friday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively, at Allen Station.
