Kristen Adkins pitched a one-hitter and doubled home the only runs of the game to lead McKinney North to a 2-0 victory over The Colony in the District 9-4A opener on Tuesday.
Adkins’ 11 strikeouts and solid defense led to the Lady Bulldogs’ seventh shutout of the season. Adkins has been close to untouchable lately, allowing just one hit in Lady Bulldogs last three outings.
North’s runs came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Kathy Shelton led off with an infield single but twisted her ankle going into first. Jessica Hyles ran for Shelton and moved to second base on a passed ball, while Lindsey Post reached on an error and stole third. Adkins smoked a 2-0 pitch to the left centerfield fence to plate Hyles and Post.
Adkins struck out eight of the first nine Lady Cougars hitters. The lone hit was a two-out single to shallow left field in the fifth. The defense was perfect, committing no errors, and prevented any Lady Cougar from advancing beyond first base.
"It was a nice win for our team," North catcher Hayley Adkins said. "We are playing so well together. We have really good chemistry this year. It will take us far.”
North (9-2-1, 1-0) plays Thursday in the 13th Annual McKinney ISD Tournament. The Lady Bulldogs take on Burleson at 6 p.m. at Gabe Nesbitt Community Park.
