MISD Softball Tournament

Lionettes Drop Third Straight, Adkins Powers North To Two Wins

An 0-3 start to the McKinney ISD Tournament wasn’t exactly what McKinney High coach Jeremy Greenway had envisioned for his young team.

At least, Greenway had some positives to highlight in McKinney’s 7-3 loss to Clear Brook on Friday. Greenway didn’t have that luxury following Thursday’s opening day action, where the Lionettes dropped their first two games by a combined score of 13-1 at Gabe Nesbitt Community Park.

McKinney North 7, Flower Mound Marcus 4
Prairiland 5, McKinney Boyd 4
Clear Brook 7, McKinney High 3
Irving MacArthur 5, Boyd 2
Saturday’s MISD schedule
9 a.m.: North vs. Midlothian
11 a.m.: McKinney vs. Allen
3 p.m.: North vs. Azle
3 p.m.: Boyd vs. Anna
5 p.m.: McKinney vs. Coppell

"Today’s game was a lot better. Today’s game we can actually accept defeat," Greenway said. "We played well. We hit the ball well. We hit balls hard but right to them."

Jennifer Guzman hit the ball the hardest, going 2-for-2 and knocking in all three McKinney (7-8) runs.

"She was on fire offensively," Greenway said.

Leanne Shine was tagged with the loss, her third consecutive after registering a 13-3 victory over McKinney Boyd in the District 9-4A opener Tuesday.

"She pitched pretty well," Greenway said. "She just missed a few spots like she does every now and then. You do that against good hitters and they are going to take advantage."

Gina Guajardo and Kelly Allen each also recorded one hit to round out the McKinney offense. It was a rather quiet day offensively for the Lionettes, but Greenway said his team found ways to be productive at the plate.

"We had some walks, we had some [sacrifices]," he said. "We really hit the ball well."

McKinney plays Allen at 11 a.m. and Coppell at 5 p.m. Saturday to complete the three-day MISD Tournament.

Adkins Sends North To Two Victories

Kristen Adkins blasted two home runs and pitched two complete games to lead McKinney North to a pair of victories Friday afternoon in the 13th Annual McKinney Softball Tournament.

North beat Houston Clear Lake, 6-0, in the first game Friday and knocked off Flower Mound Marcus, 7-4, in the second game. Adkins claimed her ninth shutout in the victory against Clear Lake.

Adkins, who drilled her second and third homers of the season, struck out four and allowed four hits against Clear Lake, while the defense made just one error.

The Lady Bulldogs’ bats came alive in the fifth, exploding for six runs. Singles from Amy Kilpatrick, Kathy Shelton and Amanda Paronsage got things going. Kelsey Schendt kept things alive when her ground ball was misplayed, scoring two and Adkins delivered the big hit over the left field fence, plating runs five and six.

Playing back-to-back, North fell behind early as Flower Mound Marcus converted a hit batter and two singles into a run.

The Lady Bulldogs (12-2-1) answered right back as Shelton doubled to deep center and advanced to third on a Lindsey Post sacrifice. Schendt followed with a single to center tying the score at one.

Marcus came right back and managed the biggest inning against the Lady Bulldogs this season, scoring three on three hits. After that, Adkins, who allowed six hits and fanned 10, got Marcus under control, allowing just one more hit and one walk.

Down 4-1, the Lady Bulldogs fought back, getting two in the third and four in the fifth. Shelton led off the third with a bloop into centerfield that dropped, before Marcus could make a play. Shelton slid safely into second base. A wild pitch moved her to third and she scored on Schnedt’s ground ball. Meghan Knowles singled and Kilpatrick drove in Schendt with a double to right, bringing North within one run.

In the fifth inning, the Lady Bulldogs put the game away. Schendt singled and Adkins put North ahead by lining an 0-2 pitch into the grass beyond the centerfield fence. Knowles followed with a double to center and Kilpatrick scored her, capping the scoring, with her third hit of the game.

Boyd Drops Close One To Prairiland, Falls To Irving MacArthur

Everything was going great for McKinney Boyd until 10 minutes left in Friday’s game against Prairiland.

That’s when with a 4-1 lead, Boyd second baseman Arielle Trankle suffered a bi-lateral fracture to her right ankle while stealing second base. The Lady Broncos never recovered from the site en route to a 5-4 defeat at Gabe Nesbitt Community Park.

Boyd coach Stephanie Freeman called her team’s performance the best of the year.

"We hit awesome. Our defense was solid. Our pitching was great," Freeman said. "We looked like a seasoned team. It was pretty to watch.

"All of our girls, they’re finally getting it."

Freeman said Trankle has surgery scheduled for Tuesday.

Boyd (2-10) lost its second game, 5-2, to Irving MacArthur.
