Best Of The Week

To start each week, McKinneyNews.net honors the top MISD athletes from the previous week.

We also look at best team performances, while looking forward to this week’s most appealing matchups, whether it is in volleyball, cross country, golf, tennis or football. You name it.

So check back each Sunday as we honor the best of the city’s sports scene.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

MCKINNEY’S FINEST

Top Three Performances
1-Dowell Middle School Football. In case you missed, it the Lions’ four teams – two eighth-grade and two seventh-grade – swept city rival Faubion last Tuesday by a combined score of 115-0. Wow. Look forward to Week 2, guys.

2-Stephanie Ganter and Sandy Castro. The North cross country teammates finished first and second, respectively, in the 5A division of the McKinney Invite on Saturday.

3-MISD’s football defenses. North’s defense didn’t give up a point to Forney in a 14-2 win; Boyd’s defense returned an INT for a TD (thanks, Miller Burns) and set a school record allowing Denton just seven points and five rushing yards; and MHS held Richardson to seven points and 159 total yards.

Looking Forward To …
1-Boyd vs. MHS tennis, 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Boyd. District 9-4A play gets under way this week, and how better than a meeting of Class 4A’s 25th-ranked Broncos vs. the No. 6-ranked Lions.

2-North and MHS volleyball face Frisco Centennial. The Lady Dogs play them Tuesday; the Lionettes play them Friday. Both matches are in McKinney and a chance for revenge against the defending 2006 district champs.

3-Crosstown volleyball, middle-school style. Thursday features Faubion vs. Johnson and Evans vs. Dowell.

OK, usually there’s an adjustment period to varsity football. You know, take a few games and figure out how to better play against the faster, stronger, bigger athletes that you’re up against.

For Daryn Alves? Not so much. Boyd’s quarterback, fresh off a district-championship season with the Bronco freshman team, had his second consecutive highlight-reel performance last week. This time, his 156 rushing yards – including breakaway touchdowns of 81 and 55 yards – sparked the second-year Bronco varsity program to its first-ever win, 31-6 over visiting Denton.

“They contained him a little bit, but the kid can run,” Boyd coach Don Drake said. Only a week earlier, in a narrow opening loss at Prosper, Alves ran for 204 yards, including breakaway scampers of 63 and 44 yards.

Kathy Shelton, Jr., McKinney North Volleyball

She was the spark behind a huge crosstown victory. Shelton, an outside hitter, recorded four of the Lady Bulldogs’ first five points during their five-set victory at rival McKinney High last Tuesday. Then she recorded three straight kills to finish a thrilling, deciding Game 5.

On the night, Shelton finished with 33 kills and 12 digs. Later in the week, despite a loss to Frisco, Shelton had 14 kills and seven digs.

Zach Lee, Soph., McKinney High Football

Looking like a poised veteran, Lee completed 18-of-20 passes for 316 yards during the Lions’ 28-7 road victory over Richardson on Friday night.

Lee spread the ball around to a season-high eight receivers, and he’d already recorded 216 passing yards by halftime.

He threw TD passes of 47 yards to Matt Lipka and 24 yards to Dario Jackson. And for good measure, Lee scored himself, on a two-yard run.

Wow, Zach, awesome month so far on the mound and gridiron!  I’m trying to remember back 17 years, but I can’t remember a soph. varsity Lions QB making such an impression!
