It wasn’t even close last year.
In McKinney Boyd’s first season of existence, en route to an 0-10 season, the Broncos were thoroughly dominated by McKinney High in their first Crosstown Showdown.
District 9-4A Update
This Week’s GamesKickoff times 7:30 p.m.
Thursday
Lake Dallas (3-0) at Frisco Centennial (0-3), Frisco ISD Memorial Stadium.
Friday
McKinney High (2-1) vs. McKinney Boyd (2-1)
McKinney North (3-0) at The Colony (1-2)
Frisco (2-1) at Little Elm (3-0)
Last Week’s Results
West Mesquite 49, Frisco Centennial 29
The Colony 26, Carrollton R.L. Turner 0
McKinney Boyd 43, Springtown 36
The final score was 34-0 on Sept. 29, 2006, but the dominance was evident. The Lions had 499 yards to Boyd’s 197 and seemingly ran at will up the heart of the Boyd defense.
Now, forget all that, and fast-forward.
A new season has produced new teams. Boyd has a senior class, better athletes and finds itself with a winning record – 2-1, just like MHS – heading to Ron Poe Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Friday for the rematch.
“We’re ready for McKinney High,” Boyd quarterback Daryn Alves said, walking off the field after the Broncos’ 43-36 victory over Springtown last week. “We’ve got two wins now and we’re ready for another win.”
The keys to the game appear self-evident:
-MHS has to stop Alves, who hasn’t been stopped yet. He has 561 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns in three games.
-Boyd has to stop Zach Lee’s passing. Lee completed 18-of-20 passes in the Lions’ last outing, a 28-7 win over Richardson on Sept. 14.
It should be fun, especially with the start of District 9-4A competition upon us. McKinney North (3-0) gets into the act by traveling to The Colony in hopes of maintaining an undefeated record and establishing itself as a force to be reckoned with – once again – in district play.
Little Elm (3-0) and Lake Dallas (3-0), along with North, appear to be front-runners for the district title this season. But MHS and Boyd would love to have a say about that.
See you at the stadiums.
Varsity Schedule
McKinney High (2-1) vs. McKinney Boyd (2-1)
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: Ron Poe Stadium
MHS notes: The sophomore quarterback-receiver combo of Zach Lee-to-Matt Lipka is in high gear, and it’s something the Broncos must try and stop. In the Lions’ most recent game, a 28-7 win at Richardson, Lee completed 18-of-20 passes for 316 yards and Lipka caught five of those for 113 yards…MHS had a bye week last week to rest…The Lions beat Boyd, 34-0, last season by rushing for 475 yards. Since-graduated senior Calvin Maxwell ran for 216 of those yards on 10 carries…Last season’s game is the only MHS-Boyd game in history.
Boyd notes: The Broncos are coming off back-to-back wins over Springtown (43-36) and Denton (31-6)…Sophomore quarterback Daryn Alves has already set Boyd’s single-season rushing record. His 561 yards in three games has surpassed 2006 leading rusher AJ Jones’ 551 yards, which came over 10 games…Alves is averaging 8.25 yards per carry. He’s rushed for 561 yards and eight touchdowns on 68 carries…Boyd had three interceptions against Springtown, thanks to Parker Boleneus, Phillip Sears and Jacob Sigler. Sears also led the team with six tackles…Matt Morton recorded Boyd’s lone sack against Springtown.
Tickets: Available beginning Wednesday at Ron Poe Stadium’s home side ticket booth. On sale Wednesday (10 a.m.-6 p.m.), Thursday (10-6) and Friday (8 a.m.-noon). Cost is $10 for reserved seating, $6 for adult general admission and $4 for student general admission. General admission tickets available at Boyd and MHS athletic offices on Wednesday (8-noon, 1-4) and Thursday (8-2). Cost at the gate $10 for reserved seats (subject to availability) and $7 for general admission.
McKinney North (3-0) vs. The Colony (1-2)
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: The Colony
North notes: The Bulldogs are allowing 5.0 points per game, and their defense didn’t allow any in their last game, a 14-2 homecoming win over Forney on Sept. 14…The rushing combination of Charles Cole, Damon Pitts and Kris Williams – all with more than 100 yards – have been the offense’s bread-and-butter. But new QB Vince Stanko (29-of-45 for 374 yards, six TDs, no interceptions) has provided consistency to keep the machine cranking…David Douglas is on pace for a monster year. He’s averaging seven catches, two TDs and nearly 100 yards per game…Unlike The Colony, the Bulldogs were off last week and able to rest.
The Colony notes: The Cougars are coming off a 26-0 victory over Carrollton R.L. Turner last week…In their first two games, the Cougars lost to Richland, 26-7, and to Richardson Pearce, 31-23…Tony Peoples leads The Colony’s offense with 497 rushing yards and four TDs to go with an 8.9-yard average per carry. QB Bryce Perkins had five touchdown passes and two interceptions while throwing for 571 yards…The Cougars didn’t manage a point in last year’s game against North. The Bulldogs won it, 42-0, at Ron Poe Stadium.
Tickets: Available at the North Athletic Office on Wednesday (8 a.m.-noon and 1 p.m.-4) and Thursday (8 a.m.-2 p.m.). Available at the MISD Athletic Office on Wednesday and Thursday (8-noon, 1-4) and Friday (8-noon). Cost is $6 for adult general admission and $4 for student general admission. Cost at the gate is $7 for all general admission tickets.
