The talent required for McKinney North’s run to the Class 4A, Region II championship series was reflected in the All-District 9-4A voting.

District coaches rewarded their champions, the Lady Bulldogs, with the MVP award, which went to junior shortstop Kathy Shelton, who has already committed to play for Baylor University.

The coaches, who select all members of the team, also gave their Offensive MVP to North junior outfielder Sarah Becker and their Defensive MVP to North senior infielder Lindsey Post.

North coach Dan Sedgwick won Coach of the Year honors in his first season at the school. He guided the Lady Dawgs to a 13-1 district record -- four games ahead of second-place Little Elm -- and then took his squad to the Region II championship, where it lost in two of three games to Waco Midway.

How does the pitcher of the District Champion , winning all district games except 1, not get first team pitcher ?  Then to insult her more by putting her on the 1st team infield - were she did not play.  She is deserving of better treatment than this by the district coaches.  Not a quality decision by the district coaches at all.  Then, both Knowles and Burnside left off the 1st team infield ?  My gosh, what were the coaches watching when the played North ?  Knowles is the best defensive 1st baseman anywhere around.  Did you see the catches by Knowles in Whitehouse game and Waxahachie games and then her throws to nail base runners .   Burnside is a wall at 3rd base.  Both girls contributed more than recognized for and had great bats.  Congrats to those who were awarded in the correct manner.  I know the girls will continue to do their best and work hard.  May be the district coaches could learn from them.

Unfortunately, more times than not,  a coach’s All District team in any sport is tinged by politics as much as play by the athlete. Often it’s "I’ll vote for yours if you’ll vote for mine."
This is an example of that type of thinking in several instances.

Sorry, Larry, but all district teams in high school sports have become so watered down they don’t have the same weight of recognition that they did when you and I were in school. It’s this mentality that everyone has to be recognized. Instead, it should be an elite team. Unfortunately, we are still suffering from the past two decades of "everyone’s a winner" mentality. It seems that if you start for a team in the district, no matter your ability, you are almost guaranteed at least honorable mention status.
